My book on the stories behind the sources is out. The book is large size, full color, lots of pictures, anecdotes, hundreds of footnotes. Learn about dueling culture, self-defense, tournaments, war, the masters and their treatises. For those wondering what HEMA is about, this book was written specif...

How to Interpret

HEMA is not like most martial arts. We have sources, yet we are far removed from them. The sources are oft times incomplete or vague. Re: Armor and Gunpowder

Addition Based on Facebook comments and questions. HEY armor never went away! True, but if you think it was as common in 1450 as it was in 1850 you are wrong. Yes, armor still existed. It was still used. Not quite the same as it had been though. Something is different noted by historians today and ...

Re: Armor and Gunpowder

Did gunpowder make armor go away? PART 2 Again, the short-answer is gunpowder. Artillery could defeat armor. The arquebus on defense at closer ranges, be it from behind a fortress wall or ditch, or some-other natural barrier could defeat armor. Neither was enough to make the knight obsolete though....

Armor and Gunpowder

Did gunpowder make armor go away? PART 1 http://www.pwlawrence.com/temp_art/The_Duel_2_web.jpg Short Answer – Yes. Yes, it did. Once in awhile a commonly stated fact is true no matter how much you wish everything commonly known was wrong and that only you know the true answer to a given question. L...

Have student do technique slow.
Then have student do just the technique with speed while wearing a helmet. Stop there. Worry about the next part later.

Re: Logic, Argument and HEMA

So, your method is flawed. Just because you can prevent his technique or get yours to work means it is right. What if he sucks? What if you're very good? What if you do something that works but is not a part of the source, just something you made up? Sources first. Then application. If your opponent...

Re: Logic, Argument and HEMA

Additions! Marsden, I know more about logic arguments and what about inferences and true and false and... I've had two of you politely bring this up to me in private. My best advice is to clarify below if you want to go deeper in. I'm out of character space above. I can't get more in than what I hav...

While building a strong case in of itself is important when proposing an interpretation, it is equally important to recognize logical fal...
