Re: Having trouble finding information as to WHEN to use particular guards

The short answer is "Vom tag, for everything". The obvious follow-on question is then "well, why would I ever be somewhere which isn't vom tag?", and that's where it gets complicated. Each of the four leger ('guards') can do different things. For ochs and pflug, they allow high o...

Re: Questions about specific scenarios [Longsword]

For your first question, it's directly answered: [ 18 ] Again a play from the wrath-cut 29 Be strong against And thrust. If he sees it, take it down Gloss. Note, this is when you cleave-in with the wrath-cut (as stands done before next to this): if he parries it, and with that remains strongly upon ...

Re: Question about height

Firstly, yes, absolutely. A year of practice totally will not be wasted, even if you have to take a break of a couple of years. Secondly, somewhat. Height is generally an advantage, because of reach and stride length. Strength, speed and skill are all relevant as well, though. I've got about 1.5&quo...

Re: On public challenges

To be blunt, I'd consider them an asshole. Fun exhibition matches, etc? Sure, awesome. Informal or semi-formal challenges between two people who respect each other as friends and fencers? Knock yourself out. But just showing up to be an arse about other people's training and arts doesn't do anything...

Re: Approaching Sparring

The way I tend to think of this sort of thing is in terms of two dials: choreography and compliance. Each can be set at a variety of settings. I'll illustrate this for the moment with the example of using a zwerhaw to counter an oberhaw. A simple technique drill might be fully choreographed and full...

Re: Sharpness in Greatswords?

A sword - of any type - is a pretty rubbish impact weapon. If you want an impact weapon, you get an actual impact weapon, perhaps a pollaxe. Montante and spadone treatises deliver plenty of cuts, which are rather useless without a sharp blade. They also deliver plenty of thrusts, ditto. I've handled...

Re: Can i get a Account for Wiktenauer as "Amateur"?

The basic process for getting a Wiktenauer account is to fill in the registration form and go from there. It'll normally take a few days. However, a more worthwhile place to start is probably to write to the specific translators and discuss their choices with them. If you just turn up and start edit...

Re: Training equipment?

The answers to this question will depend on where you are, and what you're studying. However, most people who ask it on here are in the US and looking at studying longsword. So a quick summary: The best balance of price and useful training tools are synthetic wasters. Pick either of Purpleheart or B...
