Re: HEMA Elections August 2016

As it's still technically 7/25 Richard has allowed me to slip in a last nomination. Steaphen Fick of Davenriche European Martial Arts School has FINALLY joined the HEMA Alliance (as a Lifetime Member)! DEMAS is the most longstanding professionally-run HEMA school in the country, and Steaphen is a ma...

Re: Updating the search function?

Mike is correct. And being a jerk. It's not a long-term strategy. When last this came up the issue was that moving was dependent on where the Wiktenauer was going, and whether we were going to need to find a host that could best serve both needs. But we can move any time to whatever host the GC sele...

Re: HEMA ALLIANCE SAFETY POLICY

Michael-Forest, I think you are conflating two different areas in this debate. Talking about the *type* of occipetal protection would be a continuum issue, but the policy deals differently with the binary of yes/no occipetal. If you want to be covered for a back of the head injury, wear a back of th...

Re: HEMA ALLIANCE SAFETY POLICY

My understanding has been that "sides" of the fingers refers to the outer sides of the index and little fingers. I would support clarifying this in the policy. Kevin, do you really want the HEMA Alliance to pick a Newton level for fabric, or perhaps several and apply them to different weap...

Re: New to Weaponry

Well, pretty much everyone in HEMA knows Kult of Athena, so if your stock duplicates theirs but your prices are higher you probably should look for a different customer base. In a nutshell, this is what HEMAists want out of a merchant: 1. IF you have to sell decorative or fantasy stuff, separate it....

Re: Helmets for HEMA

Re: Heavy Hitters: I think that Mike Edelson is correct that our heavy hitters approach BOTN or SCA, but it bears mentioning that these people are doing it wrong. Blossfechten is supposed to be technical. Your sword is your armor. SCA is doing a made-up blunt impact game, and BOTN is doing a histori...

Re: Coaching during combat in tournaments

While I may change my opinion if the development of HEMA tournaments changes, right now I'm with Edelson. Tournament is a limited training opportunity, not a fight or any complete "test" of martial arts skill. Having coaching helps underscore that context. As for the fairness issue of some...

Re: New Cold Steel Italian Longsword

Hi Gray, I like them. We have a few. My only complaint is that the handle is more of a lenticular shape than a racetrack, so that it has edges which get to be uncomfortable over time. You might not notice this cutting, but you would if you were doing bare-hand exercises for a while. Slightly filing ...

Re: HEMA Alliance Elections 2013-2014

Electronic ballots with instructions will go out this evening. If you don't have one in the morning tomorrow, before you complain to the governing council please check whether it's been more than a year since you've paid dues, as this would be the most likely reason for not receiving a ballot. Those...
