The GC This Week

Greetings from the GC! This forum thread will help everyone keep track of what the GC is doing and what it's discussing during our bi-weekly meetings and/or through our varied other communications. Because we don't don't want this information buried, comments will be disabled. This doesn't mean you ...

Presidential Address 2014

Presidential Address 2014 pres.jpg Greetings HEMA Alliance members and the rest of the historical martial arts community. The most recent election cycle has ended, and I have been elected President. We've just officially handed over the reins from last year's crew during the GC's meeting tonight, a...

Re: Interesting antique (schildt'ed sharp)

It wouldn't surprise me. This one is has quite a few strange looking things about it.

Interesting antique (schildt'ed sharp)

So what do you all say about this?

The only info on it is the company selling it says they think it's a late 18th century reproduction with a 13" crossguard and is 63.75" overall.

Re: Southeast Renaissance Fencing Open 2014

This was a fun event last year for those needing an opinion. Sounds even better this year.

Re: The Longpoint 2014 tournament review.

An 8-foot staff would probably be fine. Yeah, that's what we use down here. For me the staff is not much a tool that separates the fencers, that is a secondary aspect of it and as Dustin said one that should not be needed, but rather it is a measurement tool for the judges as to when the action has...

Re: The Longpoint 2014 tournament review.

Most refs are too far away or don't have a long enough staff to put it between the fencers at the end of an exchange. When I ref, it's easy to know when afterblows are late because they either hit the staff or the judges see the staff extended between the fighters when it lands. I'm not saying I'm a...

Re: The Longpoint 2014 tournament review.

I agree with Chidester's post on the Abzug points. What it's called is functionally irrelevant because it tests for a proper abzug. I agree with James and Jake about the ref. It's something I've been fairly outspoken about in the past. I think the staff should be between the fighters as halt is call...

Should be better: 2012-08-02_11-03-47_323.jpg 2012-08-02_11-03-36_563.jpg 2012-08-02_11-03-28_71.jpg There's damage on the skull in the foreground as well. There are actually a lot of skulls with healed traumas out there. Should be 0 points, an insufficient hit is an insufficient hit. There are diff...

Re: How the full AB affected my fight.

I didn't particularly like the doubling rules for this year, and I gave that feedback. Your scenario sounds like a double, by the standards I have for doubles. By that I mean it sounds like you started your swing before the thrust landed. My personal interpretation of doubles is a little harsher tha...
