Newly digitized book thread

Postby Michael Chidester » Thu Jul 18, 2013 3:57 pm

Lately I've been going through the libraries at Harvard University looking for rare books. My first find was a copy of Friedrich Dörnhöffer's edition of Albrecht Dürer's famous (to us) Οπλοδιδασκαλια sive Armorvm Tractandorvm Meditatio Alberti Dvreri. I've uploaded all of the scans on the wiki, but I also made a PDF for people to download; I also threw in two color scans pilfered from the Albertina web gallery. You can download the whole mess here (haz click "Full resolution"):

I've also scanned Hergsell's edition of the 1443 Talhoffer, but I'm still in the midst of processing them for posting. This weekend I plan to go back for the rare final Bolognese book, Alessandro Senese's Il vero maneggio di spada.

Here are the scans of Gustav Hergsell's facsimile of Hans Talhoffer's 1443 Fechtbuch (the Gotha version) in PDF form (they've been available as individual images on the wiki for several weeks now).

Thank you! That Talhoffer facsimile is far better than the shoddy Xerox-machine *blank*-ass copy which ARMA has touted as one of their great gifts to Humanity for years now. (Oh wait, did I say that out loud?)

Thanks Jeff, I'm doing my best these days to update a lot of that garbage. It's ridiculous that in a lot of cases the best we have to work with is 90s-era scans of 80s-era photocopies. I've got two more sets of color scans I've made from books in the pipeline, another Talhoffer and Alessandro Senese, but it actually takes quite a bit of time to put these things together (each page needs to be cropped and rotated in 2d or 3d to create the best appearance possible, and that's after the hours it takes to scan or photograph a whole book one page at a time). Look for them in the next several weeks.

Re: Digitized book announcements

The archetype of Talhoffer's "Luithold von Königsegg" fencing manual is now available on WikiMedia Commons. I hesitated about this one, since while the images aren't eligible for copyright in Germany where the book was published, there is a possibility for copyright issues here in the U.S. But WikiMedia Commons provides a safe home for problematic images like these, and they're still accessible for use on Wiktenauer (since access to the commons is baked into all wikis by design).

And here's Senese, last of the Bolognese masters. I did what I could with the photos taken in poor lighting, but you'll still see a difference between them and the few I took by the windows. Still, this should be serviceable enough for study and transcription and so on.

As always, I release any and all rights as creator of these images and donate them back into the public domain to the maximum extent permitted by law. Enjoy.

I've just uploaded "color" scans of Gustav Hergsell's 1889 facsimile of the Ambraser Codex, an unfinished late 15th century copy of Hans Talhoffer's Königsegg Fechtbuch. (Hils asserted that this was the draftbook for the Königsegg in 1985, but Leng demonstrated the proper date through watermark analysis in 2008.) My thanks go to the Widener Library at Harvard University for providing the book and facilities, and I've attached the CC0 1.0 Universal public domain deed as usual. Enjoy.
