Silly question...maybe

Postby Scott Richardson » Sun Jul 24, 2016 6:50 pm

Not an overly important question, but I was wondering: Why is all of our gear typically black? Is it to intentionally differentiate it from the sport fencing gear, which of course is usually white? Is there some historical connection to what our Medieval forebearers wore as they trained? Is it because black is half of the traditional colors of HEMA? Why?

One reason is that over the last decade and a half, there has been quite a strong movement to develop a HEMA-specific look that is different from Olympic fencing, re-enactment, kendo, or eastern martial arts. Another reason is that since the community is still relatively small, there is only so much purchasing power; therefore suppliers and manufacturers work on a relatively small scale, and have to prioritise which colours are most likely to sell to this small market - in other words, mainly black. As the market grows, I think manufacturers and suppliers will be better able to carry stock of different colours, without having to worry about selling enough to justify the investment in stock.

Historically, it's because HEMA started out mostly with repurposed sport fencing coaches gear, which is generally black.

And also motocross gear, which is, again, generally black.
